SNSF Starting Grant for Benedikt Soja
Benedikt Soja successfully applied for a Starting Grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
In the most recent call for applications for SNSF Starting Grants, Benedikt Soja's application was successful. The SNSF Starting Grant is a very competitive but prestigous funding scheme, that -when successful- brings funding from the SNSF worth around
CHF 1.7 million. Receiving a Starting Grant is a big success for Benedikt Soja and will strengthen his Space Geodesy group.
The Starting Grant will allow to develop a new concept for measuring water vapour in the atmosphere using signals from the GPS satellite system. Low-cost GPS receivers will be developed that are sensitive enough that they react to water vapour in the atmosphere. To demonstrate the feasibility, a system of 200 stations will be set up around Zurich with the help of citizen science. It will measure water vapour locally, enabling better rainfall forecasts and an early warning system for extreme weather events.
The title of the project is "AWARE: High-Resolution Atmospheric Water Vapour Retrieval with Low-Cost GNSS and Machine Learning". Read and learn more about it here.
