The full-week intensive Geoid School included lectures by Dr. Riccardo Barzaghi (Politecnico di Milano, Italy), Dr. Nikolaos Pavlis (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, USA), Dr. René Forsberg (National Space Institute, DTU-Space, Denmark) and Dr. Laura Sánchez (Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut, Technische Universität München, Germany).
The overall aim of this course is to prepare the participants to compute and use gravimetric geoids for scientific and technical applications in Geodesy. In addition, it is also a platform to get familiar with the latest geoid determination developments and to improve international contacts and collaborations among scientists who deal with gravity field modeling.
A visit to the only fundamental station in South America, AGGO, near La Plata concluded the 14th Geoid School. 40 scientists and employees of national agencies from 14 countries in North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia participated at this year's school. It shows that the realization of a physical height system becomes a priority in national mapping agencies and the importance to support nations, which have decided to tackle the resource intensive task of calculating a national geoid model.
