Welcome Arno Rüegg and Marcel Iten!

We are happy to announce that Arno Rüegg and Marcel Iten joined the Space Geodesy group.

Arno Rüegg completed his Bachelor's degree in Geospatial Engineering in 2021 and subsequently earned his Master's degree in Geomatics in 2023 at ETH Zürich. During his Master's studies, he specialized in Engineering Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Satellite Geodesy, and Navigation. His Master's thesis focused on a sensor fusion approach for building detection using machine learning applied to Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data.

Now, Arno starts his Ph.D. in the Space Geodesy group, where his research centers on ionospheric modeling based on very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data, in particular from the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS). His objective is to create ionospheric models and forecasts in near real-time by fusing data from GNSS, VGOS, and other sources using machine learning. This includes developing the capability to determine ionospheric vertical total electron content (VTEC) from VGOS, establishing the capacity to derive a Global Ionospheric Map using data from GNSS and VGOS sources, and operationalizing the process of determining and assimilating near real-time VTEC data to enhance predictive potential.

Marcel Iten has recently joined the Space Geodesy Group for his Ph.D. studies. Marcel holds a Bachelor's degree in Geospatial Engineering (2021) and a Master's degree in Geomatics Engineering (2023) from ETH Zurich. During his master he focused on Engineering Geodesy and Photogrammetry as well as on Space Geodesy and Navigation. His master thesis concentrated on the detection of seismic disturbances in the ionosphere using machine learning.
His Ph.D. research will focus on ionospheric parameter estimation for global ionospheric maps, with emphasis on data fusion techniques and the application of machine learning for ionospheric parameter prediction.

We are very much looking forward to working together and wish both a pleasant and successful time in their new position!
